AMEB exam students: please complete Google Form registration by FRI JUN 6
Students MUST bring the following to EVERY lesson:
PRINTED copies of their songs - organised into plastic sleeved display folder
(ideally purchase folders with stitched binding, rather than plastic rings, as these break in school bags!)
a 2B pencil and eraser
a recording device (such as their phone)
a water bottle
(if relevant) their “FULL VOICE” workbook
Students are required to work from a MUSIC SCORE (if available) for the songs they wish to study in their lessons.
Photocopying entire pieces of music is essentially illegal under copyright laws. At some schools (eg. Sydney Grammar), photocopying of music for such purposes has been banned completely.
It is also important (and enjoyable!) for singers to start to develop their own music libraries, as part of their commitment to their chosen "art". It also respects the composers and artists that devised the works in the first place. Their music is their livelihood, as it may be for our singers one day.
Therefore, I encourage students to purchase their own sheet music. Generally, we use digital downloads through websites such as:
as they offer an extensive range of repertoire, which is also transposable into keys suited to individual singers, which is very important. These sites also generally offer an online “player” which the student can use at home to help them learn their notes and rhythms more accurately.
If purchasing a new song, I will assist the student in determining the appropriate version of the song to use/purchase/download. I will send the student/parent an EXACT link to the version (and particular key) we have selected for purchase/download, and instructions on how to purchase/download and print.
It is the STUDENT’S responsibility to ensure they have a printed copy of the song(s) they wish to work on during their lesson.
If I need to send you more detailed information or documentation, I will use email.
However, for most communications with my current students and parents, I use an application called “Remind”.
"Remind" is a very safe, private and efficient means of communication - designed specifically for schools, parents and students. Messages can be sent, and notifications received, via ALL platforms (phone, Desktop, etc)
I have multiple email addresses as I work at a number of different schools, and so get a LOT of email on a daily basis!
My mobile number is also my private phone number - and usually switched to “DND” when I am teaching.
So I do not guarantee that I will see communications sent via these methods (or any other applications such as WhatsApp or Messenger) in a timely fashion. This can impact speedy notifications about absences.
Students are generally expected to take their own notes during their lessons - on their printed music or in a notebook. This is especially the case if you are having a CASUAL lesson.
If you are a school-aged student having lessons BY THE TERM, I will provide you with a “digital” lesson log-book through an app called “Airtable”.
Parents (especially of primary school students) can also be given access to these notes so they can keep up-to-date with our progress.
Other useful resources can be found in the "Student Zone" on this website.
All my students undertake learning in MUSICIANSHIP skills that are necessary to be an effective musician, not simply a confident singer. In particular, this involves regular sight-singing practice.
I provide high-school-aged students^ with their own personal online subscription to Mark O’Leary’s “Sight-Singing School”, which is an excellent, Australian resource for learning how to sight-sing.
The students work through this material at their own pace, as guided by me, and the cost is $12 for one year’s access, which is excellent value for this comprehensive resource.
^ Year 12 students excepted unless required for Music2 studies or external exams
