Term dates for 2026 now updated.
The "Australian Music Examinations Board" (AMEB) is probaby the most popular examination board for Australian music students, due to the convenient examination locations for face-to-face examinations and the more afforable examination fees (when compared to the various international examination boards).
AMEB provides a pathway for students to follow as they gain
technical ability
performance skills
confidence
Students can choose their own focus of formal graded exams:
"Comprehensive" exams
"For Leisure" exams
"Repertoire" only exams
"Rockschool" exams (upon request only - not my preferred syllabi!)
The AMEB pathway builds skills in a logical progression, but students are free to enter at any grade level, depending on their prior learning.
Students will consult with me regarding the right grade and exam to undertake. I encourage my singers to do "comprehensive" exams (either "classical" or "for leisure") - as these include an assessment of technical work, aural and/or sight-singing skills, and musical general knowledge. "Repertoire" exams require song repertoire only.
My preference is for ALL my students to present for face-to-face examinations. "Live" performance comes with its own set of challenges for any performer, and face-to-face examinations are an important way for singing students to learn how to better manage these.
Mon Apr 27 ~ Sat June 13, 2026 (inclusive)
(= Term 2, Weeks 2-8)
EXAMS can take place on any weekday or Saturdays (not Sundays)
Fri Aug 21 ~ Sat Sept 26, 2026 (inclusive)
(= Term 3: end of Week 5 - end of Week 10)
EXAMS can take place on any weekday or Saturdays (not Sundays)
For an additional "transfer" fee ($55), students can opt to present for their exam in one of the following sessions, if the above session is not suitable:
Session 3: Sat 10 Oct ~ Mon 2 Nov (inclusive)
Session 4: Fri 23 Oct ~ Mon 16 Nov (inclusive)
Session 5: Mon 2 Nov ~ Mon 7 Dec (inclusive)
Students in YEAR 11 wishing to present for an AMEB this year are encouraged to "transfer" to one of these sessions, so that their exam does not clash with their school Preliminary Examinations.
I ALWAYS request a SATURDAY examination. This is not guaranteed, although I cannot remember when I have not been granted it.
Dates when the singer knows NOW that they will not be available (eg. due to school excursions, exams or family holidays) must be noted on the entry form (= "exclusion dates"). There is generally NO change to examination day/time once released.
The actual examination date and time is not released until approximately 4 weeks prior to the examination.
Fees vary according to the syllabus chosen and Grade.
